May is national Water Safety Month. Water safety is a growing topic among pool professionals and government officials. With recent accidents and government regulations it is the perfect time to focus on how to have fun and be safe around your pool or spa.

A few ways to help your family be water conscious is to teach children the basic of water safety early. Tell them the rules and what to do when around water and make sure they are in the presence of an adult at all times. Have an emergency plan in place if something were to ever happen and always have access to a phone to call for help. Also make sure your pool is up to date with all local and national safety regulations including pool alarms. This simple step could be the difference in life and death.

These are just a few ways to insure water safety around your home. For more information please visit National Water Safety Month at www.nationalwatersafetymonth.com.

It can be hard to keep water in a pool. Every swimming pool or spa is probably going to start leaking at some point in its lifetime. These problems can be more than just an inconvenience. Even a hole the size of a pencil tip can result in hundreds of gallons of water loss per day. In addition to the replacement cost of the water, leaks in your pool will increase chemical demands. And could possibly lead to more serious structural and mechanical problems. Fortunately, if you can catch the problem early effective leak repair solutions are available.

By far the most common indication of a leak is the water level dropping faster than what is normally attributable to evaporation or splashing out. Often leaks are big enough that the water loss is obvious. If you wake-up to find that your pool has dropped several inches overnight you know you’ve got a problem. The bigger challenges are the smaller leaks that may develop slowly. In these cases it is important to determine what is “normal water loss” and thus avoid wasting time looking for and worrying about a leak that may not be there.

If you have an automatic fill device on your pool a dropping water level may not be as readily evident; high water bills may be the first indication of a leak problem. You may also notice an increase in the chemicals required to maintain balance, or that there is excess algae growth because the new water that’s being put into the pool is untreated.

Other pool leak symptoms may be actual physical evidence of the water that is leaking from your pool. Wet, mushy, or “healthy” spots in the lawn may be evidence of underground plumbing leaks. Structural damage, cracks, and settling of the deck or pool may also be indications of underground leaks. If left un-repaired, these problems can quickly become more serious.

Once you know you have a pool leak it’s time for action. The longer a leaking pipe, liner or pool shell is left un-repaired the more costly the eventual fix will be. You have options, some pool leaks can be easy to find and fix. In most cases however a qualified, and experienced pool leak professional will be able to provide more efficient and effective pool leak location and pool leak repair solutions that get you back into the water. Call your pool company to have a trained professional come out and decide whether or not you may have a leak and how best to go about fixing it. Most of the time this will save money and hassle in the long run because they can find and fix the leak faster.

With summer quickly approaching, lots of people are debating whether or not they should go with an in-ground or above-ground pool.

So for the those of you out there that are having this debate, here are some things to consider:

In-Ground vs. Above-ground Cost:

In most cases, inground pools—be it vinyl, concrete, or fiberglass—are going to cost, on average, between 30-70k. Although this is a big range, it’s an honest and realistic one.

You may have seen an in-ground pool advertised for “$14,999!” or something to that degree, but I can pretty much assure you that anyone doing this is giving you a warped picture as to what to expect when the bill comes in. In other words, although the pool body itself may just cost $14,999 to be installed, I can almost bet you the following is probably not included:

Patio/Decking around the pool

Electrical Hookup

Grading/Landscaping/etc.

Accessories (Like salt chlorine generators, heaters, covers, etc.)

Obviously, the size, options, and type of pool are going to greatly impact where you fall in this “average” range, but 30-70k is a good start.

When purchasing an above ground pool, there are 3 main cost areas:

The price of the kit itself (normally 2-7k)

The price of the installation (typically 1-5k)

The price of the pool surround/decking (if any)

In other words, most above ground pools, installed, cost 3-12k, not including any decking at all. And as you might imagine, decking often times will cost more than the pool itself, especially if you’re looking to surround much of the structure itself.

Inground vs. Above Ground Pool Size

Believe it or not, an above ground pool can be every bit as large as an inground pool. For example, a 30’ round above ground pool actually has more area than a 18×36 inground pool. With an above ground you’re generally limited to one uniform depth throughout.

Maintenance

When comparing the two types of pools and their required maintenance, there really isn’t much difference in terms of chemicals and cleaning, although if you don’t have a deck around your above ground pool that makes it much harder to get around and vacuum.

Longevity

The average above ground pool will last 7-15 years before the structure gives out, although their liners will last 5-9 years before they have to be replaced.

For an inground structure, the longevity really is contingent on the type of pool. For example, fiberglass should last well over 20 years. Vinyl pools should have a structure that lasts just as long, but their liner needs to be replaced on average every 6-11 years. As for concrete, their structure should also last a very long time, but keep in mind they may need to be resurfaced every 9-13 years.

The Pentair IntelliFlo intelligent variable speed pump is a monumental breakthrough in energy efficiency, extended service life and silent operation. There are two reasons why the IntelliFlo system is able to decrease energy use.

It uses an exclusive permanent magnet motor which is fundamentally a more energy efficient design compared to traditional induction motors.

It includes a variable speed capability, digital controls, and proprietary software that allow custom programming for optimum pump speeds for specific needs. The result is up to 90% in savings compared to other one-speed or two-speed high efficiency pumps.

Other advances include:

Quietest pump on the planet – Thanks to its motor, enclosed design, and lower running speed you can barely notice it’s operating.

Longer life – With its permanent magnet motor IntelliFlo produces less heat and vibration than traditional systems. This helps reduce stress and wear on your equipment and increasing the life of your pool.

As your pool changes, so will IntelliFlo – You can add equipment and features, or change them without reducing pump performance and efficiency.

Unique ability to manage water features – Want to add height to deck jets or fountains? Want to increase the water flow to waterfalls or vanishing edges? IntelliFlow is perfect with its variable speeds to perfectly manage all your water features.

With Pentair you can estimate your savings online. Just visit www.pentairpool.com and click on the Pool Pump Energy Savings Calculator.

Parents and families can build on their current safety practices by adopting water safety steps at home.

Adding as many water safety steps as possible is the best way to assure a safe and fun experience in your swimming pool. Parents and families can build on their current safety practices by adopting water safety steps at home. These simple steps could save a life of someone you love!

These are safety steps you can adopt at your pool:

Always watch your children when they are in or near a pool or spa

Teach children basic water safety tips

Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid entrapments

Have a portable telephone close by at all times when you or your family are using a pool

If a child is missing, look for him or her in the pool first

Share safety instructions with family, friends and neighbors

Learn how to swim and teach your child how to swim

Learn to perform CPR on children and adults, and update those skills regularly

Understand the basics of life-saving so that you can assist in a pool emergency

Install a four-foot or taller fence around the pool and spa and use self-closing and self-latching gates; ask your neighbors to do the same at their pools.

Install and use a lockable safety cover.

If your house serves as a fourth side of a fence around a pool, install door alarms and always use them. For additional protection, install window guards on windows facing pools or spas.

Install pool and gate alarms to alert you when children go near the water

Ensure any pool you use has compliant drain covers, and ask your pool service provider if you do not know

Maintain pool covers in good working order

Consider using a surface wave or underwater alarm

Check your local regulations to see if some of these items are required by law.

Swim spas are becoming increasingly popular in todays markets. They are a great mix between a pool and hot tub. But there are benefits that only swim spas can offer. According to Pool Life Magazine there are 6 benefits to owning a swim spa.

Space-saver

For those who don’t have a ton of space to work with the footprint of a swim spa is much more manageable. Most swim spas are 8 feet by 16 and around 52 inches deep. This makes them a much better option for the space conscious consumer.

Lower Price Tag

With the average in-ground pool costing around $30,000 most people can get away with spending half of what they would to build a pool. They can also be less expensive to maintain each month saving the owner loads of cash during the life of the spa.

Year-round rehabilitation and relaxation

Some swim spas also offer additional jets for relaxation and therapeutic purposes. An owner can perform rehabilitation exercises in the swim spa. Then later that day relax near the warm and bubbly jets for muscle and joint relief. Other health benefits can include improving blood circulation, inducing better sleep at night, and reducing arthritis pain.

Underwater gym at home

A swim spa is a great option for a low impact work out. An owner can decide to turn on the current jets and simulate lap swimming or purchase a variety of exercise equipment designed for use in a swim spa. This also helps with those who are more conscious of being able to exercise in the comfort of their own surroundings.

Safe fun for the entire family

Swim spas are a great option for families with children. The depth is perfect for parents to be able to let their children play and swim while only being a feet away at the other side of the swim spa. It is a great way for parents to also teach their children how to swim. It is a much more controlled environment and they can bring toys and game to make the lesson even more beneficial.

Lower maintenance

The maintenance functions are really no different from a pool to a swim spa. You will need to monitor pH levels and sanitization is most important. But even though the steps might be the same you will use less chemicals saving you money in the long run.

Cost. When compared to an in-ground pool, it’s possible to save thousands and thousands of dollars on an above ground pool.

Ease of installation. Again, compared to in-ground swimming pools, the installation of an above ground pool is a breeze. It even is a do-it-yourself type of project that isn’t all that complicated. Instead of tearing up your yard for days or even months, an above ground pool usually can be installed in a day.

More location choices. An above ground pool comes in a variety of sizes and often can be located in different spots in your backyard. That’s a lot more flexibility than an in-ground pool.

Portability. If you decide a location for an above ground pool should be closer or further away from the house, the pool can be moved. And when it comes time to move to a new home, the above ground pool can come with you.

No sacrifice in features. Portable pools are available with steps, diving boards and maybe of the same features of in-ground swimming pools. Above ground pools come in sizes large enough to accommodate an entire Little League baseball team or small enough for a few people at a time, depending on your needs.

Often safer. Although this will depend on the setup of your pool, it is obviously more difficult for family pets or small children to wander into above ground pools. The ladder can be disconnected when the pool is not in use.

Easier maintenance. You will still need the same chemicals and, depending on the pool size, the same filter to keep the water clean and usable. But because few above ground are as large as in-ground pools, you will spend lesson chemicals, water usage will be lower and the cost to heat the pool – if that is an option you have chosen – won’t be as great.

Takes up less space. If your backyard isn’t large enough to accommodate an in-ground pool, you certainly can find an above ground pool that will fit. Above ground pools come in a variety of sizes – some handling 30 people or more with water 5 feet deep – or smaller models made for a small family.

Reuse your yard. An above ground pool offers the flexibility to be disassembled at the end of the summer so that the yard can be used for other purposes when it’s not swimming season. If you choose to keep the pool in place, above ground pool covers will keep the water clean and safe.

Keep your taxes where they are. An in-ground pool adds to the value of your home, which means your property will likely be assessed at a higher rate. That will lead to additional property taxes. That’s not an issue with an above ground pool, which isn’t a permanent addition to a home.
